The Illinois Supreme Court has temporarily halted enforcement of a court ruling that struck down taxes paying for public works projects across the state.
The stay will allow time for the Supreme Court to examine the lower court's ruling.
Tuesday's order was no surprise. Both parties to the lawsuit supported a delay until a final ruling comes down.
Officials passed a law in 2009 that created a $31 billion public works program. To pay for it, they raised taxes on liquor, candy and items such as toothpaste. They also legalized video poker.
An appeals court struck down the law last week. It ruled the measure violated a requirement that each piece of legislation be limited to a single subject.
