Nicole Richie was sentenced Friday to four days in jail and ordered to undergo drug and alcohol treatment in a plea deal on DUI charges. Richie was sentenced to 96 hours in jail -- minus six hours already served -- fined $2,048 and put on three years probation. She must also undergo drug and alcohol counseling. She has until Sept. 28 to serve her time and she will be allowed to choose between county jail and city.
Given that she had a DUI conviction in June 2003, Richie could have been jailed for up to a year. Richie, in a sleeveless black dress, arrived at the Glendale court at 8:25 a.m. -- five minutes early -- on the arm of her boyfriend, musician Joel Madden.
She was arrested on Dec. 11 in Burbank for driving her black Mercedes SUV the wrong way on the 134 freeway. The reality-TV star failed a field- sobriety test and told police she had taken a pain killer and smoked marijuana, authorities said.
Richie, who has a previous DUI conviction on her record, appeared before a court commissioner who sentenced her on the spot.
The 25-year-old Richie, who, along with Paris Hilton, stars on reality TV's "The Simple Life," is the daughter of pop singer Lionel Richie.
