A San Diego County man who allegedly claimed he could cure the AIDS virus has pleaded not guilty to practicing medicine without a license.
Keith Barton of La Mesa entered the pleas Wednesday to treating patients without a license and to identity theft and grand theft. That's because prosecutors say he impersonated a real California physician who's also named Keith Barton.
Prosecutors say he charged $18,000 for a treatment that he claimed would cure a woman and her children of HIV. The district attorney's office says one child who failed to receive proper treatment later died.
Barton faces up to five years and eight months in prison if he's convicted.
