A Fort Carson soldier has pleaded guilty to charges in the death of his infant daughter, who died of severe bleeding of the brain after a fall. Prosecutors dropped a charge of first-degree murder against Pfc. Johnathon Klinker, 22, after he pleaded guilty Friday to child abuse resulting in death and second-degree assault.
He could face 30 to 64 years in prison at a sentencing hearing scheduled for July 9.
Klinker said on Oct. 13 that his 7-week-old daughter, Nicolette, hit her head after he held her about 4 inches off the ground by her arms, then let her drop to the floor. She died at a hospital four days later.
Klinker said he was imitating a doctor whom he had seen do a reflex test by holding a baby’s arms up.
"I'm taking full responsibility for everything that’s happened," said Klinker.
Deputy District Attorney Donna Billek said the baby’s mother, Amanda Redatsky, supported the plea agreement.
Fort Carson officials said it would be up to Klinker's commanding officer to initiate any proceedings to discharge him.
