A suspect is scheduled to appear in tribal court Friday in the death of a 1-year-old girl on Montana's Fort Peck Indian Reservation, the second major event in recent weeks to rattle residents of the sparsely populated reservation.
Much remains unknown in the latest case.
Authorities have declined to identify the 42-year-old female suspect or say what charges she faces, citing the ongoing investigation. They also have declined to say how Kenzley Olson died or whether the woman and baby were related.
Investigators initially said Kenzley was abducted from her home this week in the small town of Poplar. An Amber Alert was issued Wednesday, and the girl was found dead later that day.
But FBI spokeswoman Sandra Yi Barker could not confirm whether authorities still believe the child was kidnapped.
The woman was taken into custody in the case Wednesday evening. Court officials said she is set to appear before Chief Judge Stacie Crawford for a probable cause hearing. Federal charges also are anticipated in the case, an FBI spokeswoman said.
In the earlier case on the reservation about 20 miles from the U.S.-Canada border, a man allegedly abducted a 4-year-old girl from a Wolf Point park in late February. She was found alive several days later.
Authorities say the man sexually assaulted and attempted to kill the girl. He has pleaded not guilty.
